Subject: [roots] Autotransplantation case

from one of my 2nd year residents....I am keeping my fingers crossed on this one!!!! - Fred

Hello everyone,

Here is an autotransplantation case that we did this morning at
Einstein that was treatment planned with Dr Barnett.
I would like to thank our oral surgeon attending Dr Kim for
extracting #30 and #1.

15 y.o healthy female with non restorable #30. It was decided
that #17 or 32 would not be suitable donor teeth for site #30
because they would be difficult to extract without sectioning.

It was decided to use #1 as a donor tooth. Roots were about
1/2 fully developed. The donor was kept "out of the mouth" in
Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution for around 40 minutes. The palatal
root of #1 was placed in the area of the former "distal" root
of #30 and the buccals of #1, in the "mesial" area of #30.

I removed around 4mm of interradicular bone and spent some time
preparing the palatal surface of the crown of #1 in order to
allow a better fit and infrapositioning of the tooth.I also
reduced the occlusion about 1mm on #1.

5.0 vicryl mesial and distal interproximal sutures were placed.
"Bond A Braid" ortho wire was placed from #29 to 31 with
flowable composite.

Patient was given a prescription for doxycycline 100mg BID X 7d
and Ibuprofen 600mg QID prn pain.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we achieve success in this case...

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. - Rachele Luciano DMD
