Subject: [roots] Rare Fx visualization on a CT
Hereís one of the few CTís Iíve ever taken that shows probable root fracture on the coronal slice.
I couldnít probe a pocket on this one, but suspected from the presentation (buccal swelling near
the furcation (not apical) that it was possibly fractured. I prescribed a CBCT for this one.
This woman is one of the most severe gaggers Iíve ever had; she needs IV sedation for the extraction.
If I hadnít seen the crack line, it would have been a difficult decision to try and retreat her tooth;
very limited jaw opening, gagging. Iím glad I saw a crack on the CBCT, itís the one additional bit of
info creating a COD. We all would have been extremely frustrated setting up the IV sedation,
accessing this and finding out it was cracked.
I bet this root cracked due to spreader loading so it propagated apicocoronally. - Terry
